Board of Trustees Meeting

This was the first time that the Board of Trustees met face to face. To me personally, the BOT meeting was the most important accomplishment of the conference. Whether the SMSS Alumni and Friends Foundation [SMSSAFF] will survive its trial period [which ends in 2008] as a tax-exempt association as provided for under the provisions of the US IRS Article 501 (c) (3) approval, depends to a large extent on the BOT's awareness and understanding of the ramifications of said 501 (c) (3) article and compliance thereto. The capacity of SMSS Alumni and Friends to generate donations, particularly from corporate donors, depends to a large extent to our compliance to the provisions of our 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt status.  I am sure that when the members of the BOT will have been fully appraised of the 501 (c) (3) related requirements [after reading and digesting the pertinent reports/documents provided them in their BOT packets] they will be more prepared to respond to their BOT responsibilities.

Frankly, it would be quite difficult for any SMSS alumni organization in the States, and perhaps anywhere,  to lead a sustainable fund-raising effort for  SMSSI without a tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Service.  So it was good that the BOT members came in full force and were very receptive and understanding on our association's  501 (c) (3) related commitments.
