At around 10 A. M. the members of the Board of Trustees [BOT] had to
leave the Assembly hall to attend a long delayed BOT meeting at the
Church rectory. The rest of the Conference participants stayed at
the assembly hall to administer/witness the Coin Challenge, the
promotion of the book entitled "Odyssey of an Igorot Mission Girl"
and the proposal of a marathon/walkathon fund-raising event during
the 2008 SMSS alumni and friends grand reunion by Sheli Abeya
Torrevillas. I
was not there during these activities as I was at the BOT meeting but judging from accounts by those who participated, these
events went pretty well with Marie Ullocan Buking orchestrating the
activities.
The proposed marathon/walkathon, I was told,
was well accepted and this was no surprise to me at all. The
fund-raising potential as well as the health consciousness that the
events can instill on SMSS students and their counterparts in other
schools in nearby communities; as well as providing a diversion for them from addicting
and criminality-prone activities can not be over emphasized. The
proposal is now being pursued diligently by Sheli and company. Hopefully this will be the start of an annual or periodic event - an
event that students and the youth can look forward to and train for.
