The following are some selected articles/emails saved
or culled
from the internet that may be of interest to SMS Sagada Alumni and Friends.
- An Open Letter
to the Rt. Rev. F. R. Graves, D.D., Bishop of Shanghai
and Bishop in Charge of the Missionary District of the Philippine Islands:
from the Rev. John A. Staunton, Jr., Priest-in-Charge of the Mission of St.
Mary the Virgin, Sagada, Philippine Islands. Sagada: The Igorot Press, 1919.
This open letter is posted here not so much to inform the differences of Fr.
Staunton with the Bishop of Shanghai, but because the letter gives an insight
as to the philosophy and what maybe called Fr. Staunton's strategic plan,
which he pursued with passion, to Christianize and educate the Sagada Igorots.
These are highlighted [by maltreb aslagal] in colored fonts or letterings. See
a related article:

- Sisters of St.
Mary. This article is posted in the SMSS
foundation website in the
hope that the strength, flexibility and sacrifices that the St Mary's sisters
demonstrated in overcoming political policy and doctrinal conflicts, war and financial difficulties in their humanitarian missions, will somehow rub
on to SMSS alumni and friends, in their efforts towards sustaining the operations of St.
Mary's School, Sagada. The education and Christianization of Igorots must be a
continuing concern from Igorot generation to Igorot generation.
- Christian Education in the Philippines.
This article is posted here as a reference
on the subject of Christian education. You may want to compare the concepts
discussed in this article with that pursued by Fr. Staunton in his Sagada
Mission.
-
From Bare Feet to Academic Accolades.
The principal character here, Dr.
Andrew Bacdayan of Banga-an, Sagada is a graduate of St. Mary's
School and the article is posted here as testimony to our claim that
through SMS many Igorots were able to educate themselves and gain lofty
positions in their chosen fields of endeavors.

- Thanks, Dr. Alipit.
Dr. Alipit is another St. Mary's Graduate who
made good at his profession. This article is yet another proof of an Igorot
who was able to overcome economic difficulties and cultural barriers, attain
higher education, and distinguish himself in the community he settled in, in
probably the most advanced nation in the world in the field of medicine -
the United States of America. The article is posted here to serve as
inspiration to SMSS students to, likewise, strive for higher education
and/or try to become assets in whatever community they will settle in.
Dr. John and wife Jo are also among the most consistent and benevolent
donors to the "Save SMSS Humanitarian Effort". Perhaps that is why they
continue to be blessed with much by HIM from whom all blessings flow. Truly
they are worth emulating.

- The Essence of Lang-ay.
This is a speech delivered by Edwin Abeya on
the occasion of the second celebration of Lang-ay [April 6, 2006] in
Mountain Province, Philippines. The speech is posted here in the hope that
more Igorots will internalize and live the essence of Lang-ay.
Edwin is another St.
Mary's Graduate who made good in his chosen fields of endeavor - a retired
commander of the U. S. Navy, a successful businessman, a faithful husband
and loving father. But perhaps what he will be long remembered for by his
Igorot constituency, is his uncompromising stance for and in behalf of what
he is - an Igorot [Igorot nga namintakeng uray ad-da dara na nga Ilocano]. Edwin together with his
wife Mia pionered quite a number of Igorot-related initiatives in the USA.
They initiated the East Coast Grand Kanyaw which is now an eagerly anticipated
yearly event for Igorots from the East Coast United States including Texas
and Georgia. Edwin and Mia are co-founders of the Igorot International
Organization [IGO] and the Igorot International Consultation [IIC]. Edwin
started the Bibaknets [which was subsequently taken over by Harry Basingat,
John Dyte and Rose Presley] linking Igorots from all corners of the globe in
cyberspace. Edwin's Lang-ay Speech reveals quite candidly his love for his
people - the Igorots.
- The Sagada Postboy circa 1953.
The Sagada Postboy has a long history. This
edition is posted here as a challenge to current SMS students - that it shall
never be said that the Postboy died during their watch.

- The Centennial
Homecoming. Highlights of
Centennial home coming by Nellie Ballola. This email is posted here to inform
alumni and friends about concrete accomplishments as well as offers of support
towards rehabilitating SMS. The email is posted here in the hope that other
alumni and friends maybe encouraged to likewise support the vision and mission
of SMS in whatever means that is comfortable with them.
- Philippine church recalls paradoxical
history. It has been said that Igorots
were never conquered by the sword; only by the cross. In a way this article
substantiates that claim.

-
Regenerting a Race with Tools and Bibles. This
article touches on the works of Fr. Staunton. It is posted here, however,
for the note posted at the end of the article as follows:
"And
the final note is this. Not only is the " renewed heart life" and the "deep
moral basis" necessary for the sake of the Philippines. It is necessary for
the sake of the entire East. Bishop William F. Oldham puts it strongly, but
probably none too strongly, when he says : " The crux of our missionary
activities in Asia is in the Philippine Islands. If we fail to Christianize
the Filipinos, we shall fail to Christianize Asia. If we succeed in
Christianizing the Filipinos, we shall succeed in all Asia."
What say ye, has
all Asia been Christianized today? If not then the Philippines was not
Christianized. How do you resolve this with the fact, that the Philippines
is currently known as the only Christian country in the Far East?
- The
Rationale Behind the name "Igorot" in the Title of the "IQ", "IIC" and
"IGO". Surfing the
internet recently, I was amazed to find out that the question of "who are Igorots and who are
not" is still being hotly debated by students from the BIBAKA [Bontoc, Ifugao, Benguet, Apayao, Kalinga, and Abra]
Provinces . St. Mary's
students may want to prepare themselves, for as surely as the sun sets, many
of you will soon be embroiled in this great debate. More so when the great
defender of the name "Igorot" was none other than our very own former SMSS
teacher and prominent Philippine Historian, Dr. William Henry Scott. This article/speech is,
therefore, included in this website for whatever its worth to SMSS students. LBS.
- IIC-6 Homily.
This Homily was delivered by Mia Apolinar Abeya, an SMS graduate, during the
Ecumenical Service on the occasion of the 6th Igorot International
Consultation [IIC-6] in Melbourne Australia on April 23, 2006. The
theme of the homily is: "Where do we go from here?" referring to the just
concluded IIC and the five preceding IICs. Mia traces what has been
accomplished by Igorots in their IIC journey and then counsels that
Igorots go forth from hereon with love. It is a beautiful and inspiring
homily and is therefore included in this website to encourage or inspire SMS
graduates to go forth into the world with LOVE !. Yes, LOVE penetrates all
barriers towards success.
Mia, by the way, is a co-founder of the Igorot International Consulation [IIC]
and the Igorot Global Organization [IGO]. She is active in almost every activity
promoting a better image of the Igorot. She, with husband Edwin, had
pioneered several Igorot related endeavors in the East Coast United States -
i. e. the East Coast Grand Kanyaw, BIMAK, and the play Katchay.
- Golf's Blessings.
This consists of an article on the 2nd SMSSI golf sponsored tournament in
Manila on Nov. 6, 2007 by Alena Mae Flores published in the Manila Bulletin;
and a report on the 2nd SMSSAFF golf sponsored tournament in North America
on August 17, 2007 by the golf preparation committee chairman, Erwin Killip.
