Dear
Everybody,
I am
pleased to report that through the efforts of Mrs. Mel Longid, who
presided over a meeting of alumni and friends of SMS at the house
of Max and Connie Gayagay in Sydney, they decided to form the Alumni &
Friends of St. Mary's, Sagada in Sydney, Australia. In the same meeting,
the members of the newly formed association decided to sponsor one SMS
faculty member.
This
happened last April, 2006 while some of the SMS alumni (including
me) were attending IIC 6 in Melbourne. In a casual meeting with Mel just
before IIC 6, I told her about our faculty sponsorship program and
requested her to appeal to the Sydney based alumni to participate.
Praise the Lord she succeeded.
The
attendees at the meeting were: Father George Gayagay, Francisca Gayagay,
Lourdes Nucup, Max Gayagay, Cornelia Gayagay, Christina Solomon, Elpidio
Tumapang, Anne Tumapang, Juliet Comafay, and Benedict Comafay.
The
members of the organization would include anyone who studied at SMS, including
those who did not finish high school at SMS. Thus, 18 members were
identified. The friends are the children, spouses, brothers, sisters,
nephews, nieces, in-laws, grandchildren (18 and above) of alumni and
anyone who shares the vision of SMS. With this definition, 41 friends
were identified.
The
members agreed to initially link the organization with the Metro Manila
Chapter of SMSAA. Thus, the payments to SMSSI for the faculty
sponsorship will be coursed through the Manila chapter. The Manila
chapter will initially advance the money, which will be replenished
later by the Sydney chapter. The Sydney chapter agreed to collect
Australian $ 10 a month per member. Thus, from a conservative figure of
35 alumni and friends, they expect to raise more than enough money to
support one SMS faculty member.
These
alumni and friends quickly made a commitment after Mrs. Longid explained
to them the vision of making SMS the best school in the Cordillera, the
tremendous achievements in pursuit of said vision, and the need
for faculty sponsorships as the most appropriate scheme to ensure the
financial viability of SMS in the immediate future.
Please
join me in thanking Mel for all her efforts. I hope to see SMSS
alumni and friends in other places follow the example set by the Sydney
and Metro Manila Chapters.

Have a
good day.
