The SMSS gymnasium is one of the priority projects of St. Mary’s
School of Sagada [SMSS] as per its 5-year development plan towards
providing quality education to its students.
About nine hundred
sixty thousand pesos [P960,000] has already been raised by alumni and
friends towards the construction of the gym, the total construction cost
of which was initially estimated at two million pesos [P2,000,000].
Estimated construction cost has now gone up to two million five hundred
pesos [P2,500,000] due to material and labor cost increases and
significant improvements of the peso-dollar exchange rate in favor of
the peso. Alumni and friends are now targeting to raise one and a half
million pesos [P1,500,000] to complete the project. Thus, SMSS alumni
and friends have scheduled two major fund raising events for year 2008
as part of their grand reunion/homecoming activities:
a golf tournament
at John Hay, Baguio City on March 25, 2008; and the
“Legs for Health and
Literacy” a charity fund-raising run/walk festival to be held in Sagada
on March 29, 2008. These
are in addition to ongoing individual as well as group solicitation
efforts towards generating funds for the gymnasium.
Through the gymnasium, it is hoped
that SMSS can continue moulding students of a sound mind in a sound body
all-year round even through inclement weather. For sure students of
other schools will be benefited by the SMSS gymn since SMSS has been
actively promoting inter-school games with receptive schools such as St.
Paul’s High School, Balbalasang, Kalinga; St. James School, Besao; St. Alfred’s
School, Tamboan; and the Kayan Catholic High School, to name a few.
The construction of the SMSS
gymnasium is also in consonance with SMSS’s commitment to help raise
the bar of quality education for Igorots or indigenous hinterland folks
in CAR. With the advent of the SMSS gymn, other schools in the
Cordillera Administrative region [CAR] could be encouraged to strive
and build their own gymnasiums to the overall benefit of Igorots or
indigenous hinterland students.
Finally, the SMSS campus is usually
the venue for: visiting dignitaries, including the Philippine President
and entourage, regional dialogues, conferences,
briefings, workshops, seminars and the like. The SMSS gym offers a
covered venue for such activities particularly during inclement
weather.
So, the SMSS gymn is not only
beneficial to SMSS but to a broad spectrum of users from the
municipal, provincial, regional and national levels transcending religious and
political affiliations as well as ethnic origins.
The SMSS gymnasium deserves your
support. So those who have been blessed more in life and would like to
share their blessings in support of moulding a healthy and literate
